Small Space Solutions: Mirrors instead of Glass Doors

A rather unusual design for small kitchens is to install mirrors instead of glass for a wall cabinets’ glass door.

Mirrors create additional light by reflecting a kitchen’s natural light – making it feel more open.  Also, more “movement” is felt because the mirror reflects your movements and opening the doors changes the reflections focal point.

Installation is simple:  remove the pins on the back of the door, remove the glass and replace with a 1/4″ thick mirror (doors are 7/8″ thick).  Put the pins back into place and install the door.  It’s a good idea to take the removed glass panel with you when ordering the mirrors to confirm the correct size.

Our design works best with wood frame door styles such as Adel and Ramsjo.   Aluminum doors don’t have pins – so the glass can’t be replaced. The Liljestad and Lidingo doors have mullions and don’t create the same “open space feeling” as the wood frames doors do.

About IKD

IKD began several years ago designing IKEA kitchens for IKEA authorized installation contractors. We've successfully completed thousands of IKEA kitchen designs for every possible range of size, shape, budget and style. We still continue to design for these IKEA contractors, but also serve those IKEA consumers that just want a design or will install themselves. Most often customers want a better quality design than what they can do with IKEA's Home Planner.
